Craig Campbell - Fish

I'm a little late getting to this one, but here's Craig Campbell's "Fish", which he released this past week, and has already debuted at 53 - making it the largest rise this week on the country music charts.

Fish, taken from Campbell's debut album "Craig Campbell" and is the 2nd single after the top 20 hit "Family Man". Fish tells of the man's girlfriend who likes to fish, which of course the man likes.

The lyrics are very country, but are fairly shallow - that shouldn't be too much of a bother to most people though. The lyrics basically describe him finding out that she likes too fish, and how she wants to fish all the time, and he's so thankful that he found a girl that likes fishing so much.

The style is also very country, and fun to listen too. The tune is fun, with fiddles filling in between phrases. Campbell has a great country voice, and even though it's not shown of incredibly in this song, it just seems to come easy to him.

"Fish" is already doing well on the charts, being the highest debut of the week (and as said earlier, the biggest chart rise of the week) - and I'm expecting it to at least make it to the top 20. I can't say if it will beat Family Man or not, but it's a great addition to Craig Campbell's music repertoire. A music video is in production currently, and we can expect to see that very soon.

Kellie Pickler–Tough

Kellie Pickler is releasing the first single from her upcoming album today – the single is called “Tough” and is already making it’s way up the Charts, debuting at #59. The album has yet to be named, but it’s expected to be released this fall.
“Tough” is about a regular girl who “wanted lace…pearls…[and] to be a princess like all the other girls”. But when life got hard, she wanted to “even up the score” by being “tough”.

The song is upbeat, with very well-written lyrics. A catchy tune, with instruments and arrangement that return Kellie to more of a country style (most of her music has merged in some pop). Filled by banjos and strings, and backed by guitar, the song is mixes several different styles of country together with excellent skill.

Kellie’s voice shines in the song, with her signature twang showed off and with great power on the higher notes. She continues to make us wonder how she didn’t win, or at least come in 2nd, on American Idol.

This songs quality production and performance guarantees some good radio play. This track is sure to do well on the charts, and it already has had a pretty good debut on the Hot Country Songs chart.

Shania Twain - Today is Your Day

Well, it's finally here! After 6 years of waiting for another release from country superstar Shania Twain, the singer has released her new single "Today Is Your Day". This single is her first since her Greatest Hits album, and also her first track to not feature the work of her ex-husband "Mutt Lange". It was released at the end of the finale episode of Shania's TV show "Why Not? with Shania Twain", and is now available for purchase at iTunes!

"Today is Your Day" is a charming, up-lifting song - and a different style than I personally have ever heard from Shania. It departs from her usual mix of Country and Pop, and goes more towards a folk style. The first verse is accompanied by Piano, and strings enter in the chorus - then the second verse is accompanied by Banjo and Guitar, creating a large contrast in styles between the verses.

The lyrics are very simple, mostly made of simple rhymes. For example, "You got what it takes, you can win. Today is your day to begin", "I know you can and you will, get to the top of the Hill" or "When people throw sticks and stones, all they can break are your bones". It makes the lyrics sound as if they were written by a relatively new songwriter, with little experience. While the lyrics aren't "bad" in any way, Shania has done better in the past.

The tune is simple and charming. The tune in the verse is fairly repetitive, and it doesn't reach it's full potential in the chorus - but overall was written well (especially if you factor in that Shania hasn't written in over 6 years). In the second verse, a harmony part enters, which adds quite a bit to the quality.

"Today Is Your Day" is a simple song, that is fun to listen too - and it overall is very good. The main problem with this song, is that it's no where near the level of quality we've found in Shania's songs. In other words, she didn't match her previous work - which leaves us disappointed. She is rumored to be working on a new, 5th studio album, and it's unknown if this track is for that album or if it's a special release to celebrate her return to the music business.

CMT’s Next Superstar Winner…

This year, CMT debuted the new talent TV show “CMT’s Next Superstar” – sort of a country version of American Idol. This week, the winner of Season 1 has been crowned:

Matt Mason, a 25 year old from Indiana, was named the winner at the end of the finale episode that included guest star Kristin Chenoweth. He has now signed a record deal with Warner Music Nashville's Elektra imprint, and will Luke Bryan on the CMT On Tour concert series.

"It's all very surreal," Mason said , "I've wanted this for so long. I couldn't be more grateful for this opportunity and look forward to making the most of it. Huge thanks to everyone who voted for me."

Lady Antebellum names next album "Own the Night"

On June 7th, Lady Antebellum announced the name and release date of their upcoming album! It will be called "Own the Night" and will be released on September 13!

"We took more time to write and record this record than we've ever done before," said Charles Kelley. And so far, that time and work is paying off, as the lead single from the album, "Just a Kiss" has become the fastest rising single of the group's career. (for a review of "Just a Kiss", Click Here)

The name, "Own the Night", appears to come from a song from the record called "We Owned the Night"; which Hillary Scott said was one of their favorite songs from this album, and is all about "a special once-in-a-lifetime moment".

Reba announces Fall Solo Tour

Country Superstar Reba McEntire announced today that she'll be going on a Solo Tour this fall, touring the United States and Canada. Starting in September the Tour will be visiting at least 31 cities in the 2 countries. Reba will have 3 groups opening for her throughout the tour; "The Band Perry", "Steel Magnolia" and "Eden's Edge". Dates and Cities will be released on Reba's website sometime in the following weeks. Reba says that they're currently planning the new show, designing the production and putting together the new stage and new lights.

Reba finished a tour with George Strait and LeeAnn Womack, called the "Twang Tour" earlier this year - and released her album "All the Women I Am" in November 2010. (see the review here) And more recently, she has been the latest addition to the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Reba was known in the 90's for putting on extravagant shows that included dancing troupes, rising platforms, etc, etc, and in the late 2000s even went on tour with Pop-Singer/American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson. I'm looking forward to hearing her opening acts and am especially looking forward to seeing what she does with these upcoming shows.

Top 25 Country Artists since 1985

Billboard has updated it's "Top 25 Country Artists" list to include data from 2011. This list basically ranks the 25 country artists who have had the biggest careers in and biggest influence on the country genre. The largest change since last years list is Taylor Swift's entry into the list at #24 - her addition was credited to her phenominal sale numbers, with her album "Fearless" being the top sold album (in any genre) over the past 5 years. Swift's entry pushed LeAnn Rimes (who was at 25 last year) off the list.

The top 5 artists are:

5. Tim McGraw - Since his career entry in 1994, McGraw has released 24 #1 Hit Singles, and his tours with his wife Faith Hill (#18 on the Top 25 list) were some of the highest grossing tours in Country Music history.

4. Alan Jackson - Jackson has taken 50 of his charted titles on Country Songs into the top 10, and 26 of those have spent time at No. 1.

3. Reba Mcentire - The best selling female country artist of the '80s and '90s, McEntire has sold over 50 Million Albums and is the 2nd highest selling female country artist of all time, 2nd only to Shania Twain. She also had a successful run in the early 2000s as Annie Oakley in a remake of the play "Annie Get Your Gun", and went on to play the lead character "Reba Hart" in the hit SitCom "Reba". She recently was added to the Country Music Hall of Fame.

2. Garth Brooks - After succesfully entering the country music business in the 90's, Garth Brooks became a music phenominon - rivaling Elvis Presley in album sales (for a time, he was RIAA's Top Selling Solo Artist Ever).

1. George Strait - Country Music Hall of Famer Strait, who holds several all-time Billboard records, tops the list this year. His 44 No. 1s on Country Songs is the most by any artist in the chart's 64-year history.

Ronnie Dunn - Ronnie Dunn

Ronnie Dunn has been known for the past years as half of the successful duo "Brooks & Dunn", and now he's released his first ever Solo Album - the self-titled album, "Ronnie Dunn". The 12 track album hits right on the mark, with very few "below average" tracks.

The album begins with the up-tempo country rock song "Singer In A Cowboy Band", and there's not much to say - good song, great beat.

It moves on with the slow ballad "I Don't Dance", which is one of the best pieces on this record. The words are very well written, with a tune that matches well. This track would do well if released as a single.

"Your Kind of Love" is another slow ballad about the strength of his partner's love. The lyrics show some weakness in the chorus, but never falls too far; and the tune and chords make the song a great track to listen too.

"Once" is the next highlight on the album - a great track in every way. The lyrics are written with incredible skill, and the music rises and falls (dynamically) in all the right places, and the song as a whole matches Dunn's voice perfectly. "Once" is another song that would do very well on the radio if released as a single (which I believe it will be).

"Cost of Living" leaves me with mixed feelings. The lyrics tell of a man interviewing for a job in a troubled economy with a high cost of living. The lyrics and tune are uneventful, and never seem to go anywhere.

Then there's Dunn's debut single "Bleed Red". A great track that is doing fairly well on the charts. For the full review on this track, click here.

"Last Love I'm Tryin'" is another slow ballad about a man who's had his heart broken many times before, that he's decided that this is the "Last Love [he's] Trying". A beautiful piece, and performed well by Dunn.

"I Can't Help Myself" has a great chorus, and the lyrics are mostly very well done. The verse has some shaky points in the songwriting, but Dunn makes up for any shortcomings in the chorus - making this a song I thing most fans will enjoy.

The album ends off with "Love Owes Me One", a slow sad track accompanied only by Piano and some light Organ, highlighting only Dunn's singing. A great ending to a great album.

"Ronnie Dunn" is a great entry record for Dunn's debut in his solo career. Filled with almost all great tracks that range on all sides of the country music spectrum, this album is a must-have for any country music fan, and is sure to do well commercially.

Shania Twain - From this Moment On, Her Autobiography

Shania Twain is one of the best selling female artists of all time, and the best selling female country artist ever. Her album "Come On Over" is the best selling country album ever, and most of her releases have been certified Diamond (10 Million Copies Sold). After having marital troubles with her Husband/Producer Mutt Lange, Shania hasn't released any new songs since 2004. But this year, she has begun making her comeback to showbiz with a Book and a TV show on OWN (oprah winfrey network).

Her book, "From This Moment On", tells the story of Shania's life from her poverty stricken childhood all the way through her rise to fame, break from the music business, and now her return. The tell-all book keeps no secrets from the reader, giving details about growing up in a home plagued with domestic abuse, escaping to a battered women and children shelter with her mother, living through the tragic death of both her parents in a car accident, taking care of her siblings while she worked as a singer, being discovered and making it to the top, and her painful break-up with her husband.

"From This Moment On" gives us an amazing glimpse into Shania's mind, and tells the story in a way only she could. This book is a must-read for any fans, and marks the music legends entry back into the business.

Shania currently is starring in her own reality show, "Why Not? with Shania Twain", on the Oprah Winfrey Network, and will be debuting her first single in over 6 years on the finale episode. She will also be making an appearance at the CMT Music Awards on June 8th, presenting an award.

Brad Paisley - This is Country Music

In May, 2011, Brad Paisley released his 9th studio ablum, "This is Country Music". Filled with light, upbeat tracks "This is Country Music" has already gone #1 on the Country Albums chart and #2 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The album begins with the mid-tempo title track hit "This is Country Music", which tells a little bit about what country music is about. A fairly uneventful verse leads into a well-done in every way chorus, which shows off Brad's voice and it's abilities.

It's followed by Paisley's #1 hit "Old Alabama", the upbeat track that's been playing all over the radio over the past weeks. This track describes the singers girlfriend, a southern girl who likes listening to "Old Alabama". In the middle of the track, the band "Alabama" makes a cameo and sings along for the rest of the song. Overall a good track, as the charts have already proved.

"A Man Don't Have To Die" is about a man describing his living hell life, and how "A Man Don't Have to Die to go to Hell". The words of this track are average, with nothing wrong but nothing amazing. The tune and harmonies are very good in this track. "Camoflauge" is upbeat and fun, with a cool tune all the way through. The lyrics are below average, and have no substance in them - completely about a vehicle being painted "Camoflauge".

"Working on a Tan", like "Camoflauge", lacks any substance in the lyrics - all about a girl Working on a Tan, and not "giv[ing] a damn" anything else. But if there's one thing Paisley always gets right, it's chord progressions and tunes - both are great in this track, and his voice shines on the chorus of this track.

"One of those Lives" is an obvious highlight of this album. A great beat starts the song off, with a equally great chord progression entering to accompany Paisley's voice. The lyrics tell of a guy who thinks his day has gone badly, but then finds that a child of a family friend has cancer.

The rest of the album (15 tracks in all) has some good tracks and several collab's with other country artists like Black Shelton and Sheryl Crow. This album shows off Brad's voice and skills when it comes to tune writing and chord progressions - but leave something to be desired with some of the lyris. Overall a great album - and worth any country fan's time!

Colbie Caillat - I Do & Brighter Than the Sun

Colbie Caillat may not actually be a country singer, but much of her music is listened to by many country fans - so we decided to review her latest tracks. Caillat's next album "All of You" is to be released in early July, and she has already released 2 tracks from it, "I Do" and "Brighter Than the Sun".

"I Do" is a light and upbeat track, with a fun beats and cute chord progressions - but the Lyrics and Tune are a real let down. The lyrics are shallow, unoriginal, and repetitive, with the chorus being just "I do, I do, I do do do do do do do do. Yeah, I do I do I do do do do do do do do..."

The tune during the verse sounds promising, but disappoints the listener at the beginning of the chorus. Compared to Colbie's other hit tracks like "Bubbly", "I think I'm falling for you" and "I never told you", I do falls flat.

"Brighter than the Sun" is another light and upbeat track, and I listened to this track hoping that it would be an improvement over "I Do". It was, but it was still a disappointment. The lyrics are happy and bright, but at some phrases sound like they were written by an inexperienced writer. They are often disconnected and they leave the listener what just happened. At the chorus, the words  often sound like they were picked only because they rhymed, and not because they added anything at all to the song.

The tune during the verse leaves us doubtful, but when the song reaches the chorus it improves greatly. At the chorus, the tune almost reaches the level of Colbie's previous tracks - and it is complemented by an excellent chord progression.

In both tracks, Caillat's vocal performance is very well done - and her smooth voice is shown off.

Both tracks are sure to do well on the radio charts, but leaves us wondering if her new album will compare at all to her previous albums.

Sara Evans - Stronger

Sara Evans has released her first full Studio album since 2005 with her new album "Stronger". Stronger is a fairly small release, with only 10 tracks (11 if you get the Itunes Bonus Edition). I expected there to be a few more tracks, seeing that Evans's fans waited 6 years for this album. The overall theme of this album is the "aftermath" of the ending of a relationship.

Sara returns with her first single "A little bit Stronger", sounding more comfortable and confidant than she usually does. Stronger is a slow ballad, well-written and well-performed by Evans. Her voice fits this style more than it does any other, and that is no doubt why she was able to bring this great song to #1.

Even though this album has a small number of tracks, Evans helped make up for it by avoiding any "bad" tracks. The worst she picked were a few uninteresting tracks, with an equal number of great tracks.

The second single from this album, "My Heart Can't Tell You No", should do well on the charts. This song is about a girl who's love is in love with someone else but keeps returning to her, followed by the moving chorus "When the one you Love's in love with someone else, don't you know it's torture, I mean it's a living hell. No matter how I try to convince myself this time I won't lose control. I look up in your blue eyes, and suddenly my heart can't tell you know." Evans could make this song quite a bit better if she were to use more dynamic contrast, but it is very good.

"Alone" is a ballad with a combo of great words and great tunes and chords. Evans set high hopes for this song, saying "There's a song called 'Alone' that is going to be the third single. It's a very country ballad, but I'm telling you, that song ... I have such high hopes that this song can really change my career". I don't think this song will do much as far as changing her career, but it should do well if released as a single.

Sara Evans should have put a little more into "Stronger", seeing that it marks her return to the music business - but what was put into Stronger was very good and is a great addition to any country fans music collection.

Ronnie Dunn - Bleed Red

Ronnie Dunn has released his first single since Brooks and Dunn split, and it's working it's way up the charts.

"Bleed Red" is a unity-themed track, with the following words as the chorus "We all bleed red / we all taste rain / all fall down / lose our way / we all say words we regret / we all cry tears / we all bleed red". The Lyrics are well written and uplifting - and doesn't leave the listener questioning word choice.

The Tune is simple, well-connected, but uneventful. It leaves the listener wishing that it reached a higher climax then it actually did.

Ronnie Dunn's voice truly shines in this track. The verses and first choruses don't challenge his voice at all, but after the bridge, he really is able to show off his range. The wide spectrum of dynamic makes this piece an excellent debut track for Dunn's solo career.

This track is definitely a good start for Dunn's career after Brooks and Dunn, but probably won't be the track that he's remembered for. It does however, show what he is capable of as a singer - and is sure to do well on the charts this summer.

Dolly Parton - Together You and I

Last week Dolly Parton released her latest single "Together You and I", which is the lead single from her upcoming album "Better Day". Together You and I is a modern day remake of a duet Dolly did with Porter Wagoner in their 1970s album "Porter 'n' Dolly". In the new version, Dolly has rewritten the tune and performed it solo.

The new tune is actually very catchy, and fits in with most Country-Pop music of today. It's one of the more well-written tunes that I've heard recently, and is even an improvement over some of the pieces from Parton's last album "Backwoods Barbie". The words are still the same as they were in the 1970s version, and overall the lyrics are very good.

Parton's performance of the song was very good. Dolly's voice has aged very well, but in this track her age shows in several points. Other than that, her technique and dynamic is excellent.

Together You and I is a very good track, and may help bring Dolly back into the top 40.

Reba McEntire - All the Women I Am

Reba continues to show that she still has what it takes after 30 years in the business with her latest releast, "All the Women I am". Reba's 26th studio album and 2nd Solo album since returning to the music business after her hit TV show "Reba".

The album starts off with Reba's 25th #1 Hit "Turn on the Radio". Turn on the Radio is an uptempo song telling the singer's cheating ex that if he ever wants to hear from her again he should turn on his radio. The song was well written, and the performance by Reba was very well done.

The album continues with Reba's cover of the Beyonce hit "If I were a Boy". Reba's voice shined on the song, but it wasn't well recieved on the radio reaching only #22 on the charts.

"When Love Gets a hold of You", the 3rd single from the album, tells of what happens when "love gets a hold" of the man she loves. The song is an upbeat song, with a catchy tune and a great beat.

"The Bridge you Burn" is one of the obvious highlights of the album. The tune is fun, the words interesting, and the accompaniment arranged perfectly. This song would fare well as a Single if it were ever released as one.

The album also included some misses. The worst on the album is "The Day she Got Divorced" - the tune is a mess, and the lyrics are disconected, and accompaniment doesn't fit. "When you have a Child" is relatively uninteresting, and "A Little Want To" falls flat with the Chord Progression and Style.

A relatively small release, All the Women I am didn't shine as bright as McEntire's previous album "Keep on Loving You", but still included several great songs. In her next album, McEntire will hopefully release more tracks and avoid the mistakes of the tracks in this album. Despite the mistakes, however, "All The Women I Am" was a great release and will be a great addition to the legend's long list of great albums.

Taylor Swift - Speak Now

Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" is the latest addition to the young country singer's discography. Released October 25, 2010, Speak Now is, according to Swift, a "concept album" with the overall theme being "things" that she should have said or wanted to say to different people in her life. In her sophomore album "Fearless", Swift already was said to be pulling away from her original country style, and "Speak Now" seems to have pulled even further away.

The album begins with the lead single "Mine", a story about a skeptical girl finding "true love" and keeping the love alive through hard times. The upbeat song has a catchy tune, and shows more maturity in Swift's lyrics.

Following "Mine" on the track list is "Sparks Fly". Sparks Fly had been performed by Swift live before it was even announced as one of the tracks, and certainly sticks out as one of the best tracks on this album. The lyrics tell of a girl who "sees sparks fly" every time her boyfriend smiles. Incredibly well-written and would do well if released as a single.

"Back to December" takes a different tone than the previous songs. A slow tempo, with the lyrics apologizing to a ex who the singer hurt the previous December. The tune connected with the lyrics make this one of the highlights of this album. "Speak Now", the title track (originally released as a promotional for the album), tells of a girl who's love is marrying another girl, to which the singer wants to object when the preacher says "speak now". A catchy tune, with irresistible accompaniment, but the words need a bit of polishing...

"Mean" is Taylor Swift's letter to all those who criticise her abilities. This piece is by far the closest to country as Swift comes on this album. The following track "The Story of Us" goes the other direction, removing almost every trace of Country influence. Telling of a love that's failed, and the two parties avoiding each other.

"Innocent" is Swift's reply to Kanye West after his actions during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV VMA awards. First performed at the 2010 MTV VMA awards, this song is extremely well written in every way; and shows that Taylor Swift is willing to forgive even some of the worst grievances.

Speak Now was a success musically, and an enormous success comercially (over 1 million copies sold first week, and over 4 million copies sold over the following months). It shows a more mature Taylor Swift, and gives little to criticize.

Lady Antebellum - Just a Kiss

Lady Antebellum has returned to the charts with their single, "Just A Kiss" - the lead single from their upcoming 3rd Studio Album. The song debuted at number 28 on the Hot Country Songs chart, and is continually rising.

A slow tempo ballad, the song tells of a newly formed couple who do not wish to rush their relationship, afraid that they may "mess this thing up". They instead are happy with just a kiss goodnight. The lyrics are well crafted and worded, and the theme is more original than many of the trio's previous singles.

The tune dims when compared to Lady Antebellum's smash hit "Need You Now", but is overall good. The harmonies are very well done, and they make the chorus very enjoyable. Hillary Scott's vocals were excellent, and were well complemented by Charles Kelley's harmonies.

The piano part was poorly arranged, too much during the verse and not nearly enough during the chorus; and it overall doesn't seem to match the rest of the song - and the percussion began too early in the song, which hurt the contrast between the verse and the chorus.

Overall, "Just a Kiss" is a good addition to Lady Antebellums collection of hits, and certainly makes us look forward to the release of the full album.

Steel Magnolia - Steel Magnolia

On January 11, 2011, Steel Magnolia released their debut album. The album had it's share of hits and misses, but through all of the misses it still shows promise for the duo. Both singers have excellent voices for their style, and they have pretty good vocal control. They have a creative songwriting style, but the ballads on this album are lacking.

The collection opens with the catchy and creative song "Ooh La La". This shows off a good sample of what this duo can do. Joshua Scott Jones and Meghan Linsey both have powerful voices, and they have an interesting but great blend when put together.
The next song on this collection is the successful debut single "Keep On Lovin' You", which is a little deeper than Ooh La La, but the theme is the same that you'll hear in nearly every country love song.

Next is the single "Just by being you", which, when released as a single, wasn't received well by the critics and only peaked at 25. This song does not in any way hide their vocal talents, it compliments their voices nicely! But the song itself is boring and its sure to put a few listeners to sleep. "Edge of Goodbye", the next song, is a mess. In the verse, the lyrics and the tune don't sync up at all; of course the songwriter was going for this, but they didn't do a good job. The song overall is lifeless and doesn't help the album at all.

"Bulletproof" is almost a hit. The words are great, the tune is almost perfect. It keeps you interested, it's relate able. But the chorus leaves something to be desired; it barely builds at all, so all through the song you're wishing it would get bigger. "Not Tonight" is best song on this album. It has just the perfect amount of emotion, the lyrics are amazing and original, and it shows off both of the singers' ability. This is the song most likely to rank up on your playlist.

"Last Night Again"  is an interesting song, with interesting melodic themes. But the lyrics sound questionable, but are vague enough that you can't know for sure. "Without You" is a complete bore, and hasn't got the smallest measure of originality. The Chorus and the Verse don't seem to connect at all, and the tune is very uncreative.

"Rainbow" is the last notable piece of good material on this album. You'll fall in love with the chord progressions immediately, the lyrics are just what you need to cheer you up when you're having a bad day. (not dissimilar to Shania Twain's song "UP!") The tune is very cool, and very well connected. This song makes the rest of the album worth you're time. "Homespun Love" is in no way bad, but it's not all that great either. And the album ends off with "Glass Houses", another song that isn't interesting at all and would have been best left off of the album.

Again, this album has it's share of hits and misses; and it shows that if these 2 singers play their cards right, they'll go places. I would recommend that in the future they take longer to pick their songs, and avoid recording anymore uninteresting pieces. Do that, and they're sure to have a large future in music!
